What are common foot problems?
Athlete’s foot – caused by fungus. Occurs between and under toes due to excessive moisture. Can be treated with fungal creams and by keeping the feet and the area between the toes dry.
Bunion – deformity of the bone of the big toe. Usually there is a lump on the joint nearest the foot.
Corns and Calluses – layers of dead cells that build up where shoes rub or press.
Fungal Infections – toenail becomes thick, hardened, brittle, discolored. These are difficult to treat. Moisture worsens infection.
Hammertoe – deformity of the bones causing the toe to buckle or curl under. Over time, the joint enlarges and stiffens as it rubs against shoes.
Infection – can be a serious problem for a person with diabetes and can lead to amputation of toes, feet or legs.
Ingrown toenail – occurs when a piece of the nail breaks the skin. This may be caused by improper cutting of nails, trauma, pressure from shoes or curved toenails. Can be painful or become infected.
Nerve damage – may prevent legs and feet from feeling injuries, such as cuts or sores. Over time, the injured area may grow worse because it was not properly treated.
Other foot problems – burning or tingling sensation, coldness, discoloration and pain/discomfort.
Poor blood flow – makes it hard for feet to stay healthy or heal quickly.
